Do More People Shoot Home Invaders?

In the three years since we started publishing HomeInvasionNews, we’ve detected an increase in incidents of homeowners who shoot home invaders. Some homeowners are  even killing people who attempt to forcibly break into their homes.
By January 2013, we had already noticed an uptick in residents shooting at home invaders. But those stories were still somewhat unusual. In fact, this January 2013 story about a mom in Oklahoma who got the okay to shoot an intruder was distinctive enough for us to devote an entire story to it.

So is it legal to shoot a home invader? That depends on the state in which you live. For more details on that, check this HomeInvasionNews article updated after the Trayvon Martin shooting in Sanford, Florida.

In the meantime, our latest batch of curated news reports suggest that — despite the moral arguments against gun ownership — we’re beginning to see the results of America’s rush to arms after the last presidential election in November 2012. Some reports suggest that gun sales in 2014 have fallen sharply, but many ordinary people now seem armed and ready to shoot.
Check out some examples below of  home invaders shot in the first three months of 2014.

At 5:00 a.m., a suspected  home invader tried to break through, first the front, and then the side door of a house. The intruder was shot twice by a husband with a .357 magnum while the wife called the police. The intruder was taken to the hospital with possibly life threatening injuries. A police officer said in an interview, “When somebody tries to kick in your door and come in on your home invasion when you’re there, they’re not there just to steal anything; they’re there to hurt you.”

Detroit, MI: This mother used an assault rifle given to her by her husband just two weeks earlier to fend off three teenage home invaders who broke down her back door to gain entry. When they got inside, she warned them she had the rifle. They didn’t believe her right away so she fired a shot and the three fled. They were quickly arrested. Detroit’s chief of police has applauded the mother’s action. “She did the right thing, protecting herself and her young children upstairs.”

Three suspects forced their way into a home and two men inside returned fire.
San Antonio, TX

A group of about seven masked and armed home invaders stormed into a house, tied up the people inside and looked for money. When they found nothing, they went next door. The resident of that house was just getting out of the shower upstairs. When one of the perpetrators came upstairs with a 12-gauge shotgun, the resident took the gun away from him and shot him in the lower body. A second perpetrator who ran up the stairs to help was also shot in the neck.
